The Tower
Within the walls of the Tower
of London, almost 1,000 years of the nation's history has been played
out. In this fortress, founded by William the Conqueror, Queen Anne Boleyn
was executed, Guy Fawkes was interrogated, Walter Ralegh and Princess
Elizabeth were incarcerated and the princes in the Tower were murdered.
But it has a darker, more recent history, too spies were executed
in the Tower in World Wars I and II, and German U-boat men and Rudolph
Hess were held as POWs.
In this website, some of the Tower's curators and its chief yeoman warder have contributed some priceless historical nuggets, which reveal just what a fascinating place this stronghold, palace, prison, place of execution and tourist attraction has been down through the centuries.
