Queen Victoria’s grandchildren

Queen VictoriaWhen Queen Victoria died in 1901, she left behind an extended family network that spanned eight European thrones. The members of this dynasty, the very pinnacle of high society, referred to themselves as ‘The Club’. However, from the moment the queen died, this cosy arrangement was doomed. In particular, three first cousins – Prince George, later to become George V of England; Tsar Nicholas II of Russia; and Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany – would find themselves at the centre of a family feud and a global war.

This website looks closely at these three cousins, exploring how royal families meddled with history and only the lucky ones survived. The other five thrones occupied by Queen Victoria’s grandchildren – Greece, Norway, Romania, Spain and Sweden – are also briefly examined.
