Introduction

In AD 1, the Romans were pagans, believing in a wide variety of different gods and, increasingly, in the divinity of their own emperor. Then, in about AD 30, an obscure carpenter was crucified in Jerusalem, and nothing would ever be the same again. Three centuries later, Christianity became Rome's state religion.

Here we examine the basic tenets of paganism, and compare them with Judaism, from which Christianity sprang.
