We all know who Robin Hood was – a nobleman deprived of his estate and forced to live in Sherwood Forest as an outlaw, pursued by the wicked sheriff of Nottingham and restored to his rightful position in society by King Richard Lionheart on his return from the Crusades.
But the very first ballads that feature Robin place him firmly in Yorkshire and say that he was saved by a king called Edward. What is going on?
Here we look at the clues contained in the ballads and relate them to historical records and places, in an attempt to discover where the real Robin Hood lived – and died.
