'Stemming the Red flood' – Korea: 1950

NARRATOR: (MUSIC) Korea's capital Seoul, as in 1948 the country's first free elections are held after 35 years of Japanese rule. Called by the United States and supervised by the United Nations Committee, 90% of the electorate chose a democratic national assembly. And in the northern sector, Russian troops leave the country after setting up a Communist people's republic. But now, using a well-worn plea, the Soviet-dominated North invades the South to protect themselves from aggression. Meanwhile, a hurried meeting in Japan brings US Defence Secretary Johnson and General Bradley to Tokyo where, with General MacArthur, commander-in-chief, they discuss strategy for stemming the Red flood before the East becomes a sea of Communism menacing world peace.
