From 12 March, Mahatma Gandhi leads the Salt March against British rule in India. In the Soviet Union, Stalin orders the 'liquidation of the kulaks as a class'. In Abyssinia (Ethiopia) on 3 April, Ras Tafari becomes emperor. He takes the name Haile Selassie (Might of the Trinity). In Brazil, a revolution is caused by the government's inability to deal with the effects of the Great Depression, and Getulio Vargas becomes president. In Argentina, another revolution results in José Uriburu becoming president. The construction of the Empire State Building begins in New York; the Chrysler building is completed. On 18 March, the planet of Pluto is discovered by American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh. British film-maker Alfred Hitchcock's first talkie, Blackmail, is released. Spanish film-maker Luis Buñuel makes the surrealistic short film L'age d'or (Golden Age). |
