In Britain on 6 May, Edward VII dies and is succeeded by his son George V. After the British parliament forms the Union of South Africa, General Louis Botha becomes its first prime minister on 15 September. Japanese troops occupy Korea. China abolishes slavery. Civil war in Mexico as Francisco Indalecio Madero successfully challenges the liberal dictator Porfirio Diaz for power (Diaz resigns in 1911). Polish scientist Marie Curie isolates radium, for which she is awarded (in 1911) a second Nobel prize. Carl Gustav Jung becomes president of the new International Psychoanalytical Association. Marquis wheat, a high-yield variety resistant to frost, is introduced to the Canadian prairies. In London, an exhibition of post-impressionist art features paintings by Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh. |
