Gandhi begins the first non-violent resistance campaign against anti-Indian racial policies in South Africa. Leo Baekland invents a synthetic resin, Bakelite, the first of many synthetic plastics. Artist Pablo Picasso exhibits Les demoiselles d'Avignon (Women of Avignon), a painting that introduces a new angular form of visual expression, an early example of what soon becomes the Cubist style. Viennese composer Arnold Schoenberg's atonal Chamber Symphony causes uproar when it is first performed. The first electric washing machines are built. |
