• On 31 May, the Treaty of Vereeniging brings the Boer War to an end in South Africa. Britain now rules the Transvaal and Orange Free State.

• To spread its influence, Germany invests in the Ottoman empire, building a railway from Berlin to Baghdad.

• United States troops occupy the Philippines.

• On 11 July, Lord Salisbury retires as British prime minister. He is succeeded by his nephew Arthur Balfour.

• Italian operatic tenor Enrico Caruso makes his first gramophone recording.

• French film-maker Georges Méliès makes A Trip to the Moon, one of the earliest science-fiction films.
