Life expectancy

In 1900, you could – if you were lucky enough to live in Europe and survive childhood – be expected to live until some time in your 50s. Across the globe, many died before reaching their first birthday, and a large percentage before their 21st.

By 2000, your life expectation was 70 if you lived in China and 63 if you lived in India – despite the poverty of these countries. In the West, life expectation had risen to about 80, with women living longer than men.
