Introduction
The 20th century was a time of mind-blowing contrasts – between the extremes
of rich and poor countries, or rich and poor individuals – which were
more marked than ever before.
Other contrasts include those between oppression
and liberation, growing wealth and sudden unemployment,
peace and war, high art
and pop culture, ideas of freedom and the experience
of tyranny, technological promise and the
reality of exploitation.
