Walking on the moon: 20 July 1969

On 16 July 1969, Apollo 11 is launched from Cape Kennedy in Florida. While it orbits around the moon, a lunar module containing two of the three American astronauts is detached and lands on the moon's surface.

20 July 1969: 'Houston. Tranquility Base. The Eagle has landed.' So Neil Armstrong announces that Apollo's lunar module has touched down. 723 million watch on television as he steps on to the moon: 'One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind.' Armstrong and his co-pilot Buzz Aldrin plant a US flag, take photographs and collect samples of dust and rock.
