About this clip

Monster cult of Mao – parade: 1966

Mao Zedong watches a vast demonstration of support in Beijing. This is the Cultural Revolution in action, with Red Guards chanting and waving copies of Mao's thoughts in his Little Red Book.

Between 1965 and 1968, Mao's Cultural Revolution returns China to the basic principles of the revolutionary movement. Reacting to more liberal trends, the Red Guards and their huge parades and wall posters are violently critical of intellectuals, senior party officials, writers, artists and economists, accusing them of pro-Western or pre-revolutionary ideas. Many lose their jobs in this mostly bloodless purge.

French Pathé: news footage with some natural sound commentary added to make it into a story.
