Building the Berlin Wall: August 1961
On 13 August 1961, after wire barricades close the border, work starts
immediately on a wall that rises rapidly along the dividing line between
West and East.
Pre-fabricated concrete blocks are used to build the 28-mile-long wall
and armed guard towers. Khrushchev had responded to East Germany's demand
for him to stop people leaving for the West. As the West refuse to withdraw
from Berlin, the wall is built to 'protect' or 'imprison' East Germans.
