'Stemming the Red flood' Korea: 1950
Anti-Communist South Korea is invaded by troops from the North. The US
sees this as an act of Communist aggression and asks the United Nations
to condemn it.
At the end of World War II, the USSR and US divided and occupied Korea
along the 38th parallel until a unified democratic government could be
established. In 1948, Kim Il Sung proclaimed a People's Democratic Republic;
Soviet forces left the North. After Syngman Rhee proclaimed a Republic
of Korea in the South, US forces withdrew in 1949. However, in 1950, North
Korean troops invade the South.
