Siege of Stalingrad: 1942
Stalingrad on the Volga is under siege by German armies from September
1942 until 31 January 1943. The Russians resist until a counter-offensive
finally traps part of the German army.
The German army attacks Stalingrad. As casualties mount, Russians struggle
to hold the city, pushed back street by street to the Volga. Hitler's
forces finally take the city, but then advancing Soviet troops cut off
the German 6th Army and they surrender. A total of 110,000 Germans die;
90,000 are captured. The Red Army loses 500,000, but it has defeated Germany.
