About this clip

Stalin – Trust nobody: 1930s

Stalin watches a military parade through crowded Moscow streets. He expects war to break out again, and mounted soldiers and tanks are a show of strength.

Stalin disposes of internal 'enemies' of the USSR by purges, Siberian labour camps, executions and secret police. Responding to events in Europe, in the winter of 1938 he widens conscription and increases armaments production. Early in 1939, he discusses an alliance with Britain and France against Hitler, but then signs the Nazi-Soviet Pact in August and sends tanks against Japan.

Reuters: 50 Years of the Soviet State, a mixture of footage including Russian sources edited together; sound was either not produced or is no longer available to use.
