War! Mussolini invades Ethiopia: October 1935

The League of Nations has proved powerless against Japan's aggression and defiance. In 1935, Mussolini gives the League another chance to assert its power. Italy invades Abyssinia.

An incident between Italian and Ethiopian forces gives Mussolini an excuse to expand his empire, and he invades Ethiopia without declaring war. Haile Selassie appeals for help: a clear case of a large power attacking a smaller one. By April 1936, Ethiopia is defeated. The League of Nations condemns Mussolini's aggression and imposes sanctions on Italy.
