Make Germany pay: 1919
World War I ends in November 1918, but suspicions and hostility between
the rival countries are far from over. Representatives of the 'Big Three'
France, Britain and the United States gather in Paris to make Germany
pay.
After negotiations, disagreements and compromises, Clemenceau, Lloyd
George and Wilson arrive at Versailles to sign the treaty with Germany.
Already there are problems: defeated countries haven't participated; participants
disagree about aims and whether punishing Germany will create a lasting
peace. The 'Big Three' make the decisions. Germany feels forced to sign
to avoid more war.
