About this clip

Make Germany pay: 1919

World War I ends in November 1918, but suspicions and hostility between the rival countries are far from over. Representatives of the 'Big Three' – France, Britain and the United States – gather in Paris to make Germany pay.

After negotiations, disagreements and compromises, Clemenceau, Lloyd George and Wilson arrive at Versailles to sign the treaty with Germany. Already there are problems: defeated countries haven't participated; participants disagree about aims and whether punishing Germany will create a lasting peace. The 'Big Three' make the decisions. Germany feels forced to sign to avoid more war.
