23 November 1885
The Liberals poll the most votes but do not win an outright majority. Their drop in popularity is partly caused by public anger at the fall of Khartoum and death of General Gordon. The Liberals have also been hurt by Parnell telling Irish Catholics in Britain to back the Conservatives, in the hope that the latter will support home rule (see Further afield). Recent voting reforms have allowed many more people in Ireland to vote, and the Home Rule Party (also known as the Irish Party) now holds the balance of power. Now it agrees to support the Conservatives, so they form the new government with the Marquess of Salisbury as prime minister. |
