16 August 1881
The Land War in Ireland forces the government to pass a new act. This one is fairer than the 1870 version, as it finally gives Irish tenants the '3Fs': fair rent, fixity of tenure and free sale of tenant's interest. However, tenants who already owe rent are not covered by the new law, nor are leaseholders. Parnell and the Land League initially boycott the act and tell their followers not to pay their rent. In 1882, the government has Parnell and other leaders of the League arrested, using the powers of a recent Coercion Act. Prime Minister Gladstone negotiates a deal with Parnell. The government releases him and his Land League colleagues and agrees to extend the act to cover tenants in arrears and leaseholders. In return, Parnell calls an end to the Land War. |
