1878
Shocked by slum conditions in the cities, and what he considers debauched behaviour among the poor, religious revivalist William Booth and his wife Catherine launch a mission to bring people back to God. The Booths and their many volunteers combine preaching with practical help, and in 1878, they found the Salvation Army. Using donations – many from rich and prominent people – the 'Sally Army' crusades against drinking alcohol and for Christian worship, and offers help to the destitute in the shape of religion, hostels, cheap food and employment. By the end of the century, the charity has 3,000 centres in 34 countries. |
