30 August 1874
Factory Act

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Following pressure from reformers, including Conservatives in the mill districts of Lancashire and Yorkshire, Parliament reduces working hours for men. They can now no longer be forced to do more than ten hours' work a day, and are allowed half a day off on Saturday. It also becomes illegal to employ boys and girls under 14 full-time. A follow-up Factory and Workshops Act in 1878 brings in a system of government inspection.
