7 August 1874
The archbishop of Canterbury brings a Private Member's Bill to limit 'ritualism' in Church of England services. This is his answer to the rise of Anglo-Catholicism, a movement of Anglicans who use Roman Catholic religious practices in their worship. Controversially, Disraeli gives the bill government backing and it becomes law, outraging Anglo-Catholics and adding fuel to the ongoing debate about freedom of worship. |
