Ballot Act

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Secret ballots are introduced. This has far-reaching effects, especially in Ireland, where tenants have often been intimidated by landlords into voting against their own interests. Once the fear of reprisal lessens, many tenants vote for Home Rule candidates. Various kinds of vote fiddling continue, however, and a follow-up measure, the Corrupt and Illegal Practices Act, is passed in 1883.
