19 May 1870
Isaac Butt, an Irish Protestant lawyer, forms the Home Government Association and campaigns for Irish self-government with an Irish parliament. The organisation quickly turns into the Home Rule Party and starts winning seats at by-elections. It gathers strong support among Irish people, especially after 1872 when secret ballots allow people to vote freely. In the 1874 general election, 57 Home Rule MPs are elected. |
