The first meeting of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) takes place in Manchester. During the last two decades, skilled workers such as engineers, carpenters and boilermakers have organised themselves into 'new model unions'. These charge fairly high membership fees and, in return, offer good benefits, such as pensions. They negotiate with employers on behalf of their members and insist on full consultations before calling a strike. Despite this constitutional approach, the unions are not recognised by law, and their members are vulnerable to charges of conspiracy and agitation. |
