13 February 1867
Fenians raid Chester Castle

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

The Fenian Brotherhood in the US and the Irish Republican Brotherhood in Ireland (see 17 March 1858) launch a series of armed attacks. In 1866, Fenians try to invade Canada from the US. In 1867, the Irish Republican Brotherhood leads a rising in Ireland that is put down by government forces. Then they carry out a spectacular armed raid on Chester Castle. After the capture and imprisonment of the raiders, their colleagues attack a police van in Manchester in an attempt to free them and, in December, blow up Clerkenwell gaol in London, killing 12.

The 'outrages' having all been put down, many of the agitators are executed, but they have succeeded in putting Ireland back at the forefront of British politics. In Ulster, Protestants hold large demonstrations to protest against the attacks. (See also Further afield.)
