1 February 1855
Lord Aberdeen's government is fiercely criticised over its handling of the Crimean War. The House of Commons votes to set up a committee of enquiry into the matter, and Aberdeen resigns. Queen Victoria asks Conservative leader Lord Derby to form a government, but he declines. Reluctantly, she appoints Palmerston as the new prime minister, presiding over a Whig/Peelite alliance. |
