The United Kingdom Alliance is founded and calls for an end to the sale of alcohol. It is particularly strong in Nonconformist areas. Realising that a national ban is unlikely to succeed, the Alliance draws up a Permissive Bill, which would allow ratepayers to vote for a local ban. Its chief success comes in 1872, with the Licensing Act.
