July 1895
The Conservatives win an overwhelming majority, aided by a collapse in the Liberals' English vote. Liberals have lost touch with the concerns of working people, who are increasingly turning to trade unions and socialist groups. The Marquess of Salisbury forms a Conservative government. Joseph Chamberlain becomes colonial secretary and sets out on a mission to make the British empire secure, and to bring the colonies into an active federation, to maximise British influence and trade. The Liberal party is damaged by in-fighting, and in 1896, William Harcourt replaces Lord Rosebery as Liberal leader. |
