This is an attempt to rationalise existing legislation and give it teeth. It succeeds in laying out clearly acceptable standards of housing, and further empowers local authorities to clear slums and build new council houses. Like its predecessors, this act offers no direct Treasury funding. However, public concern has been fuelled by a string of dismaying reports into squalid housing, and after the enactment of this law, the authorities in large towns become more willing to demolish and rebuild. |
