Grand Duchy of Warsaw

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

One of the outcomes of the Treaty of Tilsit is the re-creation of a Polish state, in the form of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw. Poland was divided between Russia, Prussia and Austria in 1795, but the rise of Napoleon has led to a resurgence of Polish nationalism. Polish troops fought with Napoleon in some of his earliest campaigns, and he has not forgotten their support. Although the Grand Duchy is effectively under French control, it lasts until Russia takes Warsaw in 1813.

'There is not a more pitiable state than that of a people who become the subjects of another nation.' Napoleon
