9 August 1805
Austria joins Britain, Russia and Sweden in the Third Coalition (see Empire) against France. The combined Austro-Russian forces are decisively defeated at the battle of Austerlitz in December. Prussia stays out of the new alliance, although it will again go to war with France in 1806, when it suffers a major defeat. The Coalition eventually collapses after Russia signs the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807. |
