23 July 1803
Robert Emmet leads an unsuccessful rebellion against British rule in Ireland. Inspired by the United Irishmen's revolt of 1798, Emmet has decided to act in anticipation of a French invasion of England, having met with Napoleon in Paris. The revolt fails and Emmet is captured and hanged by the British. The French, whose fleet twice failed to land invasion forces in Ireland in the 1790s, are denied an ally and a land base off Britain's western shores. It will cost them dearly in the ongoing war with the British. 'A revolution is one of the greatest evils that can afflict the earth, it enriches the poor, without satisfying them; it impoverishes the rich who will never forget it; it upsets all; it brings adversity upon all; and happiness to none.'
