2 April 1801
The British admiral Horatio Nelson, emboldened by his success against the French fleet two years earlier in Egypt, defies orders to withdraw and sinks the neutral Danish fleet at Copenhagen. Famously, he puts his telescope to his blind eye when told of the signals from his commander-in-chief. His action ensures that the Baltic is kept free from French influence, but it wins no friends for the British. 'Two powers such as France and England, with a good understanding between them, might govern the world.' Napoleon |
