This provides for the succession of a Protestant to the English throne in case William III or his heir , his sister-in-law Anne, dies without a child surviving. To do this, the crown will pass to Sophia, Electress of Hanover – a granddaughter of James I – or her heir, bypassing the superior hereditary claims of the exiled Catholic Stuarts, now represented by James II's son James Edward, the 'Old Pretender'.
