13 February 1692
The massacre at Glencoe, a Highland village and home of the MacDonald clan, takes place. After the collapse of a Jacobite rising of 1689-90, which attempts to restore James II, a royal order demands that all clan chieftains take an oath of allegiance to William and Mary. The chief of the MacDonalds of Glencoe fails to do so before the deadline of 1 January 1692, although he signs five days later. But the Scottish secretary, Lord Advocate Dalrymple, orders Captain Robert Campbell (a member of a clan who are enemies of the MacDonalds) to make an example by killing all MacDonalds under the age of 70. After being received with traditional Highland hospitality, Campbell's soldiers massacre 38 of their hosts. Others perish in bitter winter storms. |
