13 November 1666
The Pentland Rising begins in Scotland. Support for the Covenanters (who want to preserve Presbyterianism against the restoration of the bishops in 1660) is strong in south-west Scotland. The Covenanters occupy Dumfries and advance towards Edinburgh, but heavy rain and bad organisation forces them to disperse in the Pentland Hills when attacked by government troops. Eventually, 30 are executed and the rest transported. |
