2 September 1666
Fire breaks out in Thomas Farryner's bakehouse in Pudding Lane near London Bridge in the middle of the night. A driving east wind helps the flames spread despite the (ineffective) efforts of parish officials and the lord mayor. The fire burns for four days, destroying Old St Paul's cathedral, the Guildhall, Royal Exchange, 87 parish churches, 44 livery halls and 13,200 houses. To commemorate the event, the Monument is erected in 1677 near the site of the fire's outbreak. For the full story, see Fire. |
