3 September 1658
Oliver Cromwell dies at the age of 59. His son, Richard Cromwell, is nominated his successor. Richard summons Parliament, but is unable to control it or to exercise authority over the army. He soon resigns (25 May 1659) and goes into exile, leaving the conservative General George Monck and the army to secure the Restoration of Charles II. John Aubrey attended the funeral, which he described as 'superb': 'it was the joyfullest funeral that ever I saw, for there was none that cried, but dogs, which the soldiers hooted away with a barbarous noise; drinking, and taking tobacco in the streets as they went ...'
