25 September 1643
Following Parliamentary setbacks in the war, the Solemn League and Covenant between the Scots and the English Parliament is signed in London. The Scots agree to aid Parliament in the Civil War with an army of 20,000 while Parliament agrees to reform the Anglican Church on Presbyterian lines. [It] had not been possible for Parliament to win the war against the king without the help of the Scots, and this, while it brought immediate aid, also introduced an alliance whose inner tensions and innate incompatibilities were bound to become evident with time.
