28 February 1638
The National Covenant is signed at St Giles cathedral in Edinburgh. This binds all Scottish subjects who sign to resist Anglican religious innovations, unless approved by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. The Covenanters abolish bishops and replace them with a mixed lay and clerical synod. [A] Presbyterian group ... drew up the National Covenant, signed by everyone from moderates to radicals, nobles to butchers. Illiterate apprentice-lads, making their mark instead of a signature on the rolls, used their own blood as ink. From A Century of Troubles by Stevie Davies (Channel 4 Books) |
