Voyage of the Mayflower

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

The Mayflower sets sail from Plymouth to North America, carrying 102 passengers, a large group of whom are Puritans (who become known as the Pilgrim Fathers) escaping religious persecution in England. On 15 December, the ship drops anchor off Cape Cod, in Massachusetts, and they sign an agreement to form a godly community, which they name New Plymouth. The Pilgrim Fathers are often portrayed as the founders of the United States.
