17 December 1601
Parliament passes the Act for the Relief of the Poor, codifying the Elizabethan poor laws, which specify how to deal with the growing numbers of paupers. The Act instructed justices of the peace, together with parish vestries, to set up a framework for organising poor relief. The vestry has the authority to raise money by collecting a rate from parishioners. This Act is amended later in the 17th century and remains in force until reforms in the 19th century. |
