14 August 1598
Tyrone's rebellion

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Hugh O'Neill, 3rd earl of Tyrone, defeats and kills Sir Henry Bagenal at Yellow Ford. The battle, in which 1,500 English soldiers die, marks the highpoint of Tyrone's rebellion against Elizabeth I. Tyrone's massive army of 6,000 men is many times bigger than the English forces. He also has political cunning – he manages to persuade the earl of Essex, lord deputy of Ireland, sent by Elizabeth to put down the rebellion, to make a truce in 1599 at Deputy's Pass, County Wicklow. As a result, Essex is disgraced. Despite Spanish support, Tyrone is finally crushed at Kinsale on 24 December 1601.
