Mary Queen of Scots beheaded

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

Mary Queen of Scots is executed at Fotheringhay Castle after the exposure of the Babington plot implicates her in high treason. She has been held in captivity for 18 years, but has been a focus for constant plots to overthrow the Protestant Elizabeth in favour of a Catholic regime. Elizabeth, who has unwillingly signed the death warrant of her cousin, is furious when the sentence is carried out.
