Elizabeth I knights Francis Drake on board his ship, the Golden Hind, after he successfully sails around the world – the first Englishman to do so – with piratical raids along the way. The epic voyage takes from 1577 to 1580, and Drake is financed by the queen. But as well as being a pirate, Drake is a patriot who serves in the fleet that defeats the Spanish Armada in 1588. |
