St Bartholomew's Day massacre

Previous Previous event | Timeline | Next event Next

French Protestants are massacred wholesale by French Catholics in Paris. Witnessed by Sir Francis Walsingham, Elizabeth I's spymaster, and Sir Philip Sidney, this is the climax of the French wars of religion. Similar atrocities elsewhere in France result in thousands of deaths, and cause panic in England. Fears of a Catholic invasion mount.
