24 July 1567
Protestant nobles in Scotland force Mary Queen of Scots to abdicate after she marries James Hepburn, the 4th earl of Bothwell, chief suspect in the murder of her husband. She has been queen for only six weeks. Four regents are nominated to look after her one-year-old son, now James VI. In May 1568, Mary escapes to England, where she is held prisoner by her Protestant cousin Elizabeth I, who is worried that she might try and seize the English throne. Mary's arrival results in plots and the Northern Rebellion of 1569. |
